TEDx #OneStepBeyond Event Promo
Our event will be in the format of TEDxLeicester Salon offering audience members an opportunity to engage in conversations with our speaker’s through Q&A’s and audience polling. Talks will be held in the National Space Centre’s state of the art Planetarium followed by Networking reception under the iconic rocket tower. This will no doubt be a great opportunity to facilitate collaborations and partnerships between attendees and foster innovation in the wider community.
Beyond the Blue Ocean | Dr Sam Lavander
Sam has over 20 years of research experience in remote sensing, with a focus on the use of satellite data to help understand our planet’s resources and behaviour. She has become a world renowned expert engaging with international organisations including the European Space Agency and NASA. Sam is currently Managing Director of Pixalytics Ltd. She is passionate about collaborating across a range of interests, with a focus on developing products for a wide community of users. She is also a Trustee of Sir Alister Hardy Foundation for Ocean Science (SAHFOS). She has over 60 publications to her name, ranging from atmospheric corrections of optical imagery, phytoplankton in the ocean to mapping flooding and terrestrial land cover. She is currently working on the Ocean Colour Climate Change Initiative (OC-CCI) project, precision agriculture and a UK Space Agency project focused on droughts in Uganda. A core aim of Pixalytics is to convert this knowledge into commercial products and services.

Corentin is founder and CEO of Bird.i, a startup that strives to make the best of the world’s observation imagery. He brings over 12 years experience working with cutting edge earth observation satellite technology together with a drive to bring its value and insights to all; individuals and businesses alike. Corentin began his career in the space industry in France before moving to England in 2009, and then Scotland in 2016. He has always wanted to impact our world and quickly developed his vision into a business with focus to innovate and disrupt downstream satellite technology applications, and create a mass market for the world’s most incredible images. Corentin is passionate about bringing together people from different cultures, skills and experiences. By building a company rich with unique perspectives, Corentin hopes to helps create a culture that empowers people to outperform and excel.
How to Conduct a Planetary Health Check | Dr Emily Shuckburgh
Dr Emily Shuckburgh is a climate scientist and deputy head of the Polar Oceans team at BAS, which is focused on understanding the role of the polar oceans in the global climate system. Her personal research concerns investigating the dynamics of the atmosphere, oceans and climate, using theoretical approaches, observational data and numerical modelling. She is fellow of University of Cambridge Darwin College and the Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership. The latter is dedicated to working with leaders from business and governments on critical global challenges of the 21st century such as climate change, water scarcity and food security. She has also worked at Ecole Normale Superieure in Paris and at MIT in Boston. She is a fellow of the Royal Meteorological Society, co-Chair of their Climate Science Communications Group and has acted as an advisor to the UK Government. In 2016 she was awarded an OBE for services to science and the public communication of science.
